| Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) | ||||||
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States. It is transmitted by skin-skin contact; vaginal, oral and/or anal sex. There are over 100 types of the HPV virus. A vaccine was approved in 2006 that prevents infection for 4 of the more common strains that cause cervical cancer and genital warts. This vaccine is given in a series of 3 injections. It is approved for young women up until the age of 26 but is sometimes given off-label to others. Over 20 of the HPV viruses may be detected in a PAP smear. This is not yet a routine test but is requested in high-risk situations. For more information see www.ACOG.org, www.youngwomenshealth.org, www.cdc.gov (search: HPV).
