Reports tell us that one in nine women will have breast cancer in their lifetime yet it seems more common. It may be that our lifestyle, environment, genetics and other risk factors play a role. For up to date information, I strongly recommend that concerned women visit: www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/prevention/breast/Patient. Women over 35 may calculate their lifetime risk for breast cancer (www. cancer.gov/bcrisktool). If the risk is greater than 20%, she should discuss with her healthcare provider if an MRI is recommended in addition to the mammogram. New recommendations for medications to prevent cancer are also presented. It is important to remember that ALL HORMONES may increase the growth of breast cancer (estrogens, progesterone and androgens) and should be used with caution. |
